Being a student can get expensive quickly, but having a fun in Derby doesn’t have to cost anything. Whether you are looking for somewhere to go with friends, a new study spot or simply want to explore more of the city, there are plenty of things to do without spending a penny.

Here are some of my favourite free things to do in Derby.

Take a walk around Darley Abbey Park

Darley Abbey Park is a great place to relax. With lots of green space and riverside walks, it’s ideal for getting outside to get some fresh air. You can go with friends, bring a drink from home and go for a walk along the River Derwent. When the weather is nice, it’s also a great place to bring a picnic.

Explore Derby Museum & Art Gallery

Right in the city centre, Derby Museum & Art Gallery is an easy addition to a day in town without adding anything to your spending. It’s a chance to discover more about Derby's history, art and culture. Even if museums aren't normally your thing, it can be a nice way to spend an hour or two somewhere different.

Visit Derby Cathedral

One of Derby city centre’s most recognisable landmarks, Derby Cathedral is worth visiting if you have walked past it hundreds of times but never actually gone inside. Take some time to look around the cathedral and its architecture, then explore the surrounding Cathedral Quarter. It is great to see a different side of the city without needing to plan an entire day out!

Spend an afternoon at Markeaton Park

Markeaton Park is another easy option when you want to get out of the house without spending money. You can walk around the park, meet friends and take a picnic when the weather is good. You don’t need to pay for the attractions to enjoy the park itself, making it a great choice if you are sticking to a student budget.

Look out for free events

One of the easiest ways to find something new to do is to keep an eye out for free events happening around Derby online. Eventbrite and local social media pages can be useful places to check for upcoming events. Depending on what's happening, you might community events and taster sessions.

Some events I found through Eventbrite coming up soon were free tennis open-day session at Belper Meadows Tennis Club as well as a free ticket to a Christmas market. Just remember that events are date-specific, so always check the latest listing before travelling!
